Overview

With major regeneration schemes underway in three of our cities, a reputation for university excellence in construction and the development of more than 160,000 new homes planned in the next 25 years, England’s East Midlands truly holds a place at the heart of the building technologies industry.

The sector is a strong employer in the area. Thanks to the number of active quarries in the region, there is a cluster of construction-related businesses based in Leicester, such as Lafarge, Hanson, Wilson Bowden, Aggregate and British Gypsum. Other key companies in the region include Saint Gobain, Alstom Power Construction and Bowmer & Kirkland. The region has a very well-established share of the aggregates, cement and brick and block markets.

There has been a significant increase in the number of new orders in the region’s infrastructure and public non-residential sectors, with medium-term prospects looking good, in particular in the private housing sector.
