Research & development

The universities in England’s East Midlands are at the forefront of leading-edge technological research and development.

The University of Leicester has internationally recognised programmes in space science, earth observation and planetary exploration.

The University of Nottingham is the leading UK research centre for advanced applications of satellite navigation and a major player in the Galileo mission.

Loughborough University offers regional expertise in the guidance and positioning of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).

De Montfort University focuses strongly on earth observation.

The University of Northampton’s expertise lies in the mechanics of slender structures.

In particular, the Universities of Leicester and Nottingham are engaged in front-line space research. Both offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes with a focus on space, resulting in a strong, science-trained workforce of graduates and house a number of research centres.

GRACE (GNSS Research and Applications Centre of Excellence) is a unique state-of-the-art centre for developing global navigation satellite systems. Capitalising on world-leading research taking place at The University of Nottingham, GRACE has been developed with industry, government and research institutions.

The Institute of Engineering Surveying and Space Geodesy (IESSG), based at The University of Nottingham, covers a wide range of research topics including navigation and positioning systems, photogrammetry and geographical information systems.

The Space Research Centre (SRC) at Leicester University is an international leader in technology origination, contract research, consultancy and the bespoke design and build of imaging devices.

G-STEP (GMES Space and Technology Exchange Partnership) is part of the University of Leicester’s involvement in space. It is a GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) accelerator project, applying earth observation data from satellite, aerial and ground-based earth observation to enhance business operations and competitiveness. G-STEP works with businesses and organisations to support them in pioneering GMES product development and in using GMES services in commercial and business applications.
